Local Studies Project
Project Origin
- The preparation of the launch of the “Program of Community Recreation” of the School of Arts & Culture of the Dharma Drum University (DDM)
- - The academic vision of an interdisciplinary program – “Localogy”
- - An attempt to establish a sustainable relationship between DDM and Jinshan Township
Project Goal
- To provide practical research opportunities for the “Programme of Community Recreation” of the School of Arts & Culture of the Dharma Drum University
- To gather records and accumulate research results of local historical accounts, the local environment, community, and enterprises
- To start the fundamental academic research of local sustainability and international exchange
Project Structure
This project includes the following: 1. Forum series on local cultural resources; 2. Fundamental research database of local historical accounts; 3. Compilation and publication of Jinshan and DDM historical accounts and images
1. Forum series on local cultural resources
In coordination with student recruitment next year (2011), community recreation groups and researchers of the related fields will be mobilized to organize forum series and study camps across Taiwan. Core themes of discussion include: culture and creative industry, community building, community participation, environment and ecology, life-long learning, social welfare, etc. Local dialogues will be conducted on a wide scale. All data will be compiled and recorded in a systematic and thematic manner. The visual and audio records will be broadcast through web radio; historical accounts will be matched with images.
2.Fundamental research database of local historical accounts
Though the above activities, a database will be established by acquainting the mode of investigation adopted by culture & history workshops of Taiwan. The database will include local researches, books, collections, event records, personnel databases, pictures, discussion topics, etc. An interactive platform of domestic culture & history workshops for info sharing and communication will be set up. During the execution process, the project coordinator will invite and seek the assistance of community recreation centers, community colleges, local governments, the Council for Cultural Affairs of the Executive Yuan, etc. The initial number of domestic culture & history workshops to be established is set at 100, and will be adjusted on an annual basis. We will gather related researches and major case studies in core areas such as “the Operation Plan for Culture and Creative Industries,” “Community Creation and Civic Participation,” “Spatial Environment Planning and Design,” “The Exploration and Planning of Cultural Resources.” By collecting these we will be able to enhance the quality of the researches and to facilitate the building of a website in the future.
3.Compilation and publication of Jinshan and DDM historical accounts and images
With the regional relationship between DDM and Jinshan as the nucleus, and through a humanistic analysis, the geo-political relationship between DDM and Jinshan will be explored and clearly delineated starting from the geography and transportation. There will be close collaboration between culture & history workshops, such as the Jinshan Culture & History Workshop, the Jinbaulibao Culture & History Workshop, the North Coast Culture & History Workshop, township offices, and the DDM Community College. As pictures and images as well as professional geographical data are hard to obtain and their analysis requires more specialization than commonly found in ordinary culture & history workshops, hence, this project will focus on large scale compilation and will present its results in publications so as to facilitate the preservation and disemination of rare data.
